Topstep vs FTMO 2026: Futures vs Forex Prop Firms Compared

Last updated: July 2026. This comparison gets searched a lot, but the two firms barely compete for the same trader — the real question underneath it is usually "should I trade futures or forex," not "which firm is better."

The market difference matters more than the firm

Topstep only offers futures. FTMO is forex/CFD-focused (available on MT5). If you already know which market you want to trade, that alone usually answers this comparison — the rule structures below only matter once the market question is settled.

The rule that trips people up: trailing vs fixed drawdown

This is the detail most comparisons skip. Topstep's drawdown is trailing — it ratchets up with your best end-of-day balance and never moves back down, which means your safety margin shrinks as you get more profitable, not just when you lose. FTMO's max loss is calculated from the initial balance and stays fixed. A trailing drawdown punishes giving back profits more aggressively than a fixed one — if you tend to run up profit then give some back before locking it in, trailing drawdown is the harder rule to survive, not the easier one your % numbers might suggest.

Pricing structure difference

Topstep charges monthly until you pass or cancel — this rewards traders who pass fast and penalizes slow, cautious evaluation attempts. FTMO charges once per attempt with no recurring fee, which is the opposite incentive: no rush, but you pay full price again on a reset.

Bottom line

Trade futures → Topstep is the only one of the two that offers it, so the comparison mostly ends there. Trade forex/CFDs and want to give up simulated profits and reset if needed without a recurring monthly clock → FTMO's fixed drawdown and one-time fee fit better. If you're still deciding between forex and futures as a market before picking a firm, that's the decision to make first.
